Navigating My Path

Updated: May 31, 2024

I find being a man in my late 50s presents unique challenges, especially when it comes to fitting in and finding a sense of belonging. Many of my peers find camaraderie through traditional pastimes like golf, cigars, and card games—activities that have never really resonated with me. This divergence sometimes leads to feelings of isolation, as I search for ways to connect meaningfully with others.

The pressure to conform to these conventional activities has been strong, but I am a Greenland shark.  My strength is increased through embracing my unique path. Rather than forcing myself into activities that don't bring me joy, I find fulfillment and connection in spending time with my family and engaging in activities that genuinely interest me.

Whether it's gathering with a men's group to discuss our feelings or being able to laugh at myself while playing a game of four square with my pals, these unconventional or even goofy interests bring me a profound sense of strength and belonging.

Participating in a men's group has been particularly empowering, providing a space where I can share and listen to others' experiences, fostering deep, genuine connections. It's a reminder that true strength comes from vulnerability and authenticity, not from adhering to societal expectations.

I navigate my journey by embracing my interests and values. This approach has allowed me to build a life filled with meaningful connections and a true sense of belonging that is uniquely my own.
