Gratitude on the Gridiron

Being a Greenland Shark isn’t just about slow, steady wisdom—it’s also about braving the elements with a sense of humor. Months ago, when my wife purchased tickets for our friends and us to see our alma mater, the University of Illinois, face off against Northwestern University at Wrigley Field, the date of November 30 jumped out at me. I immediately sent a laughing "brrr" to the group text.

When I sent that text months ago, I didn’t quite picture myself stepping out into weather that’s, well, 20-something degrees and windy. As I stood under my warm shower this morning, I wasn’t grumbling like a Shark caught in a current. Instead, I found myself reflecting on gratitude—and a bit of surprise.

Getting older has brought unexpected changes, like how going out into the cold has started to lose its appeal. It never used to be a problem, but now, the thought of staying warm often sounds better than bundling up and braving the chill. Today, though, I’m reminded of how fortunate I am to have that choice—to head outside for the experience or stay cozy indoors.

Thanksgiving has just passed, and I spent it surrounded by family in a cozy house with more food than we could eat—thanks to the efforts of my daughters, wife, and mother-in-law. Today, I’ll bundle up for this game with warm clothes and two pairs of socks under my boots, knowing that there are so many people out there who can’t even find clean socks, let alone tickets to a football game or a toasty car to get there.

This game feels like a convergence of identities: an Illini alum, an Evanston native, and, most importantly, a Shark. Like the namesake of the Men's group, I’ll endure the cold with resilience, bundled up in layers, armed with a thermos of coffee—or something stronger if the wind really bites.

As a Greenland Shark, the game is more than just a football match. It’s about the camaraderie, the shared laughter, and maybe some nostalgic grumbling about why we thought sitting outside in this weather was a good idea. While the players take the field, I'll be reminded that life is about showing up, no matter how icy it gets.

So, this Shark isn’t grumbling about the cold. I’m feeling grateful for all I have and for this opportunity to cheer on my Illini. (Of course, I’ll also be silently rooting for Northwestern—it’s my hometown, after all!) Life is good, and I plan to enjoy every frosty moment.

Here’s to Wrigley, football, and the joy of freezing together. Go Illini! (And pass the hand warmers.)
